SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 683
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Tom Luce, who is being honored by Mental Health America |
|
|
of Texas with the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Butt Award for Mental |
|
|
Health at the 52nd Annual Honoring Dinner: An Evening of Hope; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Tom Luce was a founding partner of the law firm of |
|
|
Hughes and Luce and served as managing partner until his 1997 |
|
|
retirement; a graduate of Southern Methodist University, he |
|
|
specialized in the field of corporate and litigation practice and |
|
|
served as lead attorney on billion dollar acquisitions and |
|
|
mergers and as lead trial attorney on major commercial disputes; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Luce served as a United States Assistant |
|
|
Secretary of Education under President George W. Bush; he has |
|
|
been appointed five times by Texas governors to serve in major |
|
|
positions, including chief justice pro tempore of the Texas |
|
|
Supreme Court; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He had a profound impact on the public schools of |
|
|
this state as chief of staff for the Texas Select Committee on |
|
|
Public Education, which was responsible for creating the most |
|
|
comprehensive education bill in Texas history; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Luce is currently serving as president and |
|
|
chief executive officer of the Meadows Mental Health Policy |
|
|
Institute, a nonpartisan organization designed to improve the |
|
|
delivery of mental health services for all Texans; he is truly |
|
|
deserving of special recognition for his many achievements; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend Tom Luce on his many contributions to |
|
|
this state and nation and extend congratulations to him on being |
|
|
named the recipient of the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Butt Award |
|
|
for Mental Health; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
