Florence Keyes Olsen |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens |
|
of Austin in mourning the loss of Florence Keyes Olsen, who died |
|
October 16, 2013, at the age of 99; and |
|
WHEREAS, An Austin native, Florence Keyes was born on |
|
September 16, 1914; she grew up in the Clarksville area, and she |
|
graduated from Austin High School in 1931 and attended a business |
|
college; and |
|
WHEREAS, She eloped with Homer Olsen, a young newspaperman, |
|
in 1936, and his work took them to Dallas and Wichita Falls before |
|
they returned to her beloved hometown in 1949; they shared 60 |
|
years of marriage and were blessed with three children; she |
|
became the proud matriarch of the family and was known as |
|
"Nannie" to her 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and |
|
one great-great-grandchild; Mr. Olsen was the well-known city |
|
editor of the Austin American-Statesman; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Olsen had a 40-year career at the Texas |
|
Capitol, where she was employed by Senator Charles Herring and |
|
later served as a receptionist outside of the Senate chamber; the |
|
Senate honored her as a "Texas Treasure" in celebration of her |
|
90th birthday; and |
|
WHEREAS, She was an active member of the community, and after |
|
her retirement, she dedicated much of her time to volunteering as |
|
a member of the Auxiliary at Saint David's Hospital; in her |
|
latest years, she lived at the Renaissance and served as head of |
|
the Hospitality Committee; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Olsen had a long and wonderful life and left her |
|
family with countless precious memories; she was beloved by many, |
|
and she will long be remembered with respect and affection by all |
|
who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Florence Keyes Olsen; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Florence Olsen. |
