SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 969
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the Houston-Baku Sister City Association and the Azerbaijan
  Center in Houston in celebrating Azerbaijan Republic Day; and
         WHEREAS, Azerbaijani Americans are a recognized ethnic
  community with an established presence in Texas, where they
  actively contribute to regional diversity, intercultural
  understanding, and peace and prosperity; and
         WHEREAS, The Republic of Azerbaijan was proclaimed 97
  years ago on May 28, 1918; it was among the first nation-states to
  grant universal suffrage rights and was recognized by other
  democratic nations, including the United States of America; and
         WHEREAS, Azerbaijanis around the globe make up an ethnic
  group of some 45 million people; each year, they observe May 28 as
  Republic Day and reflect upon the many contributions their
  forefathers made to the spread of democracy; and
         WHEREAS, For 97 years, this historic day has provided hope and
  inspiration to all those who cherish freedom and self-determination,
  and it is a pleasure to join with Azerbaijanis in this state and
  around the world to celebrate their country's history and proud
  origins; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby commemorate the 97th anniversary of Azerbaijan
  Republic Day and extend to all those involved in the Houston-Baku
  Sister City Association and the Azerbaijan Center sincere best
  wishes for a memorable celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this special occasion.
