SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 971
WHEREAS, Members of the Denver Harbor Senior Citizens
Center in Houston are celebrating the center's 35th anniversary
  in May 2015; and
WHEREAS, Though it was officially established on June 6,
1980, the organization's roots can be traced back to the late
1970s, when a group of senior citizens in the Denver Harbor
neighborhood began to gather for social and recreational
activities; the group met in the area's one-room library for many
years before moving in 2001 to a space in the newly constructed
multiservice building in Denver Harbor Park; and
WHEREAS, Known to members as "El Centro Alegre," or "The
Happy Center," the Denver Harbor Senior Citizens Center helps
individuals 60 and older retain their sense of self-worth and
purpose through daily amusements, such as dominoes and arts and
crafts, while monthly birthday celebrations and field trips create
opportunities for them to socialize and make new friends; and
WHEREAS, The center is funded by the United Way of the Texas
Gulf Coast and the Area Agency on Aging, and it benefits from the
leadership of its director, Juan Alejandro, and its board
president, Roy Zermeno; under their expert guidance, the
organization's caring and dedicated staff ensure seniors remain
healthy through telephone and home visits to the ill, biannual
health screenings, nutritional breakfasts and lunches, and weekly
exercise programs; in addition, the center offers transportation
for residents living within two and a half miles; and
WHEREAS, For 35 years, the Denver Harbor Senior Citizens
Center has provided elderly residents with essential services as
well as an important outlet to stay active and social, and the
center is indeed deserving of recognition for its many
contributions to the local community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
Legislature, hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of the
Denver Harbor Senior Citizens Center and extend to all those
  associated with the center sincere best wishes for the future;
  and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for the center as an expression of high regard from the
