SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1043
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Irma P. Hall on the grand occasion of her 80th birthday; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of great charm, grace, and talent, Irma
  Hall is well known for her generosity of spirit, and she is a
  beloved resident of Dallas; and
         WHEREAS, She was born June 3, 1935, in Beaumont; she grew
  up on the South Side of Chicago and attended Briar Cliff College
  in Sioux City, Iowa, before returning to Texas; and
         WHEREAS, She was enjoying a long and productive career as a
  language teacher in Dallas when she was discovered by director
  Raymond St. Jacques, who cast her in the film Book of Numbers; she
  worked steadily in television and films throughout the 1980s, but
  her career took off after her performance as Aunt T. in A Family
  Thing in 1996 earned her a Chicago Film Critics Association Award
  and a Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award; and
         WHEREAS, She went on to work in such major films as Nothing
  to Lose and Steel before being cast as Big Mama Joseph in the
  box-office hit Soul Food, and she reprised the role in the
  spin-off television series; she was cast in the acclaimed role of
  Marva Munson in the 2004 remake of The Ladykillers, for which she
  received an Image Award and a Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film
  Festival; she continues to be in great demand for television and
  film roles; and
         WHEREAS, A beloved and respected member of her community,
  she is noted for her warmth, her wit, and her wise counsel, and
  she inspires those around her with her enthusiasm for living each
  day to the fullest; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to Irma P. Hall on the
  occasion of her 80th birthday; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
