SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1049
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Rance William Humphreys
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Dr. Rance William Humphreys, who died on
  October 29, 2014, at the age of 49; and
 
         WHEREAS, Rance William Humphreys was born on July 17, 1965,
  in Wharton, Texas; he lived the first years of his childhood in
  Rosenberg and moved with his family to Jacksonville in 1976; and
 
         WHEREAS, In school, Rance excelled easily; he was a
  straight-A student and received academic awards for Biology and
  Physics; he was a talented singer in the school choir and show
  choir; an excellent golfer, he was a star member of the high
  school golf team and also won many golf tournaments; and
 
         WHEREAS, He served as chaplain of the student council, and
  he was selected to attend "Boys State" in Austin; he graduated as
  valedictorian at the top of his class in 1983 with a 4.0 grade
  point average; and
 
         WHEREAS, Rance attended Texas A&M University, following in
  the Aggie footsteps of his uncles; he graduated in 1987 and was
  accepted into the university's school of medicine; he continued
  to exercise his creative talent during his time at the university
  as a member of the world-famous Texas A&M University Singing
  Cadets; he toured Europe with the group in the spring of 1987,
  served as the group's vice president, and performed the lead role
  in the barbershop quartet "The Aggienizors"; and
 
         WHEREAS, After his first year of medical school, Rance was
  awarded a scholarship from the United States Army, and he
  committed to serving the nation during and after medical school;
  he received his medical degree from Texas A&M University in 1991
  with a specialty in psychiatry; he completed his psychiatric
  residency in the army at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, and
  briefly served at Fort Stewart, near Savannah, before returning
  to Augusta; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Humphreys was promoted to the rank of major in
  1995 and served as the director of the psychiatric resident
  doctors at Fort Gordon; he deeply enjoyed mentoring the young
  resident doctors, and when the residency program at Fort Gordon
  was closed, Major Humphreys decided to leave the army and go into
  private practice; he received an honorable discharge in 1999 and
  moved to Dalton, Georgia, to start his practice; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was a highly respected psychiatrist in
  northern Georgia for 15 years, and he successfully helped many
  military veterans and their families in dealing with
  posttraumatic stress disorder; in addition to seeing patients at
  his office, Dr. Humphreys was a rotating physician at the local
  hospital, and he was a staff physician at the Youth Detention
  Center; and
 
         WHEREAS, Rance Humphreys was an exemplary citizen, an
  exceptional doctor, and a loyal friend, and he leaves behind
  memories that will long be cherished by those who were privileged
  to share in his life; although he spent the second half of his
  life in Georgia, Rance's heart always remained in Texas; now,
  therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Rance William Humphreys:  his parents, Charles and
  Glenda Humphreys; his sister, Tana Switsky; his brother-in-law,
  Joel Switsky; and his nephews, Ewan and Ethan Switsky; and, be it
  further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy and that when the
  Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rance Humphreys.
