SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1053
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Mel Waiters
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates
  the life of noted musician Mel Waiters, who died May 28, 2015; and
         WHEREAS, Mel Waiters was born and raised in San Antonio; his
  interest in music began at the age of seven when his grandparents
  gave him a set of drums for Christmas, and by the time he reached
  middle school, he was playing with bands at such venues as the Teen
  Canteen Club at Fort Sam Houston and was singing in the choir at
  Jacobs Chapel United Methodist Church; and
         WHEREAS, After a stint as a radio deejay, he transitioned
  from drummer to singer and received a government contract to
  perform at military bases across the southwestern United States;
  his fusion of blues and rhythm and blues soon attracted wide
  audiences, and he began a recording career that included such hit
  singles as Got My Whiskey and Hit It and Quit It and four albums
  on the Billboard Top 10 blues charts; he also won two Jackson
  Music Awards; and
         WHEREAS, He was a remarkably talented musician who loved
  singing and performing professionally; he had a warm, engaging,
  and spirited personality, and he leaves behind memories that will
  long be cherished by those who were privileged to share in his
  life; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Mel Waiters; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Mel Waiters.
