IN RE:
HB2824 by Lucio III (Relating to food and beverages available from a vending machine located on property owned or leased by the state.), As Introduced
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
The bill would amend the Government Code as it relates to the use of state property. The bill would require that the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) adopt rules establishing minimum nutrition standards for food offered in a vending machine on any property owned or leased by the state; exceptions are provided. The bill would require DSHS to review the standards at least every five years and would require the statewide wellness coordinator to provide information and resources to state agencies to promote state employee wellness through implementation of the vending machine requirements.
The bill would require that DSHS adopt rules by September 1, 2016, but state agencies would not be required to comply with the new requirements until September 1, 2017. DSHS indicates that implementation of the bill could be accomplished using existing resources.
Local Government Impact
No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
