CRIMINAL JUSTICE IMPACT STATEMENT

84TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 1, 2015

TO:
Honorable John Whitmire, Chair, Senate Committee on Criminal Justice

FROM:
Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB126 by West (relating to the release of certain inmates on medically recommended intensive supervision. ), Committee Report 1st House, Substituted

The bill would amend the Government Code to allow certain inmates to be eligible for consideration for release on medically recommended intensive supervision.

Increasing the number of people eligible for consideration for release under medically recommended intensive supervision has the potential to decrease demand on correctional resources by decreasing the number of people in state correctional institutions.  This analysis assumes the provisions of the bill addressing felony sanctions for criminal offenses would not result in a significant impact on state correctional populations, programs, or workloads.
