R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly
  cause for celebration, and Ethel Mae Chandler of Houston is
  reaching that impressive milestone on August 5, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Ethel Mae Chandler was born in Taylor, Louisiana, in
  1917, the oldest of the three children of Nora Davis and Jack
  Taylor; she is the proud mother of eight children, and she has also
  taken great joy in welcoming into her family five grandchildren and
  a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Chandler worked for many years in the cafeteria
  of a Veterans Administration hospital, where she became the first
  African American to operate the electric cash register; and
         WHEREAS, For half a century, Mrs. Chandler has been an active
  congregant of Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, and she
  has sung in the choir, helped with the cooking for church events,
  worked with young people, and participated in missionary efforts;
  in addition, she is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the
  Court of Calanthians; and
         WHEREAS, Ethel Mae Chandler has witnessed a panorama of
  change over the course of a century, and she has met life's
  challenges and opportunities with dignity and grace, earning the
  deep admiration of all who are privileged to know her; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Ethel Mae
  Chandler on her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes
  for continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Chandler as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
