R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, For nearly six decades, Joe Rodriguez has rendered |
|
|
exceptional service to the Brownsville Independent School |
|
|
District; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of Edinburg, Joe Rodriguez earned his |
|
|
bachelor's degree at Pan American College, where he also played |
|
|
basketball and baseball, and he later received a master's degree |
|
|
from Sam Houston State University; he began his career as an |
|
|
assistant coach at Brownsville High School in the late 1950s and |
|
|
worked his way up to athletic director, a post he held from 1991 to |
|
|
2009; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Early in his career, Mr. Rodriguez coached the |
|
|
Brownsville High baseball team to a state championship appearance |
|
|
in 1965, and he took the Golden Eagles football team to the |
|
|
regionals in the 1969 state playoffs; moreover, he was instrumental |
|
|
in raising college scholarship funds for nearly 1,000 Brownsville |
|
|
students, and as athletic director, he oversaw the upgrade of BISD |
|
|
athletic facilities to include all-weather tracks and soccer fields |
|
|
with lights at each high school campus, as well as the opening of |
|
|
the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center and the renovation of Sams |
|
|
Memorial Stadium; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This notable Texan has further given of his time and |
|
|
talents as secretary of the Brownsville ISD Board of Trustees, to |
|
|
which he was reelected in 2014 after first serving that body for 15 |
|
|
years in the 1970s and 1980s; his myriad contributions have been |
|
|
recognized with his induction into the Texas High School Athletic |
|
|
Directors Association Hall of Honor, the Texas High School Coaches |
|
|
Association Hall of Honor, and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of |
|
|
Fame; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Through his outstanding vision and leadership, Joe |
|
|
Rodriguez has made a positive difference in the lives of countless |
|
|
young Texans, and he may indeed take pride in his many achievements; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Joe Rodriguez on |
|
|
his service to the Brownsville Independent School District and |
|
|
extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Rodriguez as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
