R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Tom Maynard retired as executive director of the
  Texas FFA Association on January 9, 2017, drawing to a close more
  than 16 years of outstanding service to that organization; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard became a member of FFA in 1978, when he
  was living at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch; he served as state FFA vice
  president and as a staff member for the National FFA Organization's
  Washington Leadership Conference; after earning a bachelor's
  degree in animal production from Texas Tech University in 1986, he
  went on to a 13-year career as an agricultural science teacher,
  earning national recognition for his innovative programs in
  communications; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard became executive director of the Texas
  FFA in May 2000, and during his distinguished tenure, he helped
  double its membership from 56,000 in 2000 to nearly 116,000 by the
  end of 2016; the longest-serving chief executive in the state
  association's history, he also updated the organization's
  administrative and board structures, stabilized its finances, and
  expanded student leadership development and scholarship
  opportunities; and
         WHEREAS, At the national level, Mr. Maynard was part of an
  FFA task force that helped remove barriers to participation by
  disadvantaged students, and he assisted in creating the current
  student delegate process; he has also served as president of the
  National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education,
  which named him outstanding state FFA executive in 2016; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard currently serves on the State Board of
  Education representing District 10; a man of strong religious
  faith, he has been a choir director and worship leader at his church
  for many years; he and his wife, Freda, also own a real estate
  appraisal firm and run a small purebred livestock operation; and
         WHEREAS, Tom Maynard's broad experience, skilled leadership,
  and deep commitment to advancing the mission of FFA have greatly
  benefited that organization and the students it serves, and he may
  indeed take pride in all he has accomplished at the helm of the
  Texas association; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Tom Maynard for his
  eminent service as executive director of the Texas FFA Association
  and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Maynard as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
