R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, ChicaGirl magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary |
|
on July 14, 2017, and this decennial provides a welcome opportunity |
|
to recognize the periodical for its many contributions to the |
|
Latina community; and |
|
WHEREAS, Launched in 2007 as a free digital publication by |
|
San Antonio native Toni Lee Jimenez, ChicaGirl features stories |
|
written by Latinas and provides its readers with a platform where |
|
they can share their own ideas as well; Ms. Jimenez, a 2003 graduate |
|
of Loyola Marymount University, was inspired to create the magazine |
|
for Hispanic girls when she recognized a dearth of media geared |
|
toward that audience; and |
|
WHEREAS, Designed to empower its readership, ChicaGirl |
|
covers such relevant topics as body image, health, personal growth, |
|
socioeconomic issues, and cultural awareness; the magazine is also |
|
committed to helping young Latinas achieve their educational goals; |
|
since its founding, ChicaGirl has distributed thousands of dollars |
|
in scholarship funds, and it offers opportunities for readers to |
|
correspond with high school and college counselors who can connect |
|
them with useful resources and information; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of the past decade, ChicaGirl |
|
magazine has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless |
|
young women, and this noteworthy publication is indeed deserving of |
|
commendation as it marks this special milestone in its history; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 10th |
|
anniversary of ChicaGirl magazine and extend to its editor, Toni |
|
Lee Jimenez, sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the magazine as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
