R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Tela Terry was crowned Miss Juneteenth-Baytown at |
|
the 2017 Miss Juneteenth Baytown Pageant, held on June 9 at the |
|
J. D. Walker Community Center; and |
|
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Rho Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha |
|
Kappa Alpha Sorority, the pageant is part of Baytown's annual |
|
Juneteenth festival, which commemorates the official end of slavery |
|
in Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Major General Gordon |
|
Granger issued an order in accordance with the Emancipation |
|
Proclamation, freeing all the slaves in the State of Texas; in the |
|
years since, the anniversary of this act of liberation has been |
|
celebrated with gatherings that are both joyful and reflective; |
|
layered with meaning, these Juneteenth observances pay tribute to |
|
all those who endured the rigors of slavery, honor their |
|
immeasurable contributions to the development of this state and |
|
nation, and recognize the myriad accomplishments of the generations |
|
that have followed; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through her outstanding performance in the 2017 Miss |
|
Juneteenth Baytown Pageant, Tela Terry has brought great pride to |
|
her family and her community, and it is a pleasure to honor her for |
|
this notable achievement; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Tela Terry on |
|
being crowned Miss Juneteenth-Baytown at the 2017 Miss Juneteenth |
|
Baytown Pageant and extend to her sincere best wishes for the |
|
future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Tela Terry as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
