SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 5

In Memory |

of |
|
James W. Vaughan |
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their |
|
memories of James W. Vaughan of Clarksville, who died on May 29, |
|
2017, at the age of 95; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, "Buddy" Vaughan was born in Clarksville on |
|
October 15, 1921, to Mack and Areetta Hart Vaughan; he graduated |
|
from Clarksville High School in 1938 and attended Paris Junior |
|
College, where he was student council president and participated |
|
in track and tennis; he also discovered a lifelong passion for |
|
flying at Paris Junior College and went on to take advanced |
|
flight instruction at Love Field in Dallas; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Vaughan served in the |
|
United States Navy as a combat pilot aboard the aircraft carrier |
|
USS Shangri-La; after the war, he flew with the Naval Reserve |
|
while attending North Texas State University and The University |
|
of Texas at Austin; he returned to active duty during the Korean |
|
War, testing air-to-air missiles as a jet pilot; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Leaving the navy at the rank of lieutenant |
|
commander, Mr. Vaughan returned to Clarksville, where he owned an |
|
insurance agency and then served as manager of the Clarksville |
|
Chamber of Commerce, as personnel director of the Baker and |
|
Taylor Company, and as personnel director and company pilot for |
|
Piggly Wiggly; he worked as a personnel consultant until his |
|
retirement in 1998; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughan was president of the local Rotary Club |
|
and chamber of commerce, secretary of the Red River County |
|
Industrial Foundation, and a member of the Agricultural |
|
Improvement Association; he played a leading role in the |
|
development of the industrial park, the county airport, and the |
|
Langford Lake project; he was a member of the American Legion, |
|
the VFW, and the McKenzie Memorial United Methodist Church; in |
|
1985, he received the George F. Sunkel Award for his outstanding |
|
community service; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Vaughan enjoyed the love |
|
and support of his wife, the former Joan Sims, with whom he shared |
|
six decades of marriage; they were the proud parents of two |
|
children, James Vaughan Jr. and Clare Vaughan Rainey, and over |
|
the years, Mr. Vaughan had the pleasure of welcoming two |
|
grandchildren, Chris and Jennifer, and four great-grandchildren, |
|
Madison, Cason, Cash, and Channing, into his family; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A dedicated community leader and proud military |
|
veteran, Buddy Vaughan lived a rich and purposeful life, and he |
|
will forever be a source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of James W. Vaughan and extend condolences to his loved ones; |
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do |
|
so in memory of Buddy Vaughan. |
