SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 84
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The members of New Harmony Baptist Church in Tyler |
|
|
marked a momentous event in their history with the celebration of |
|
|
the church's 150th anniversary on April 15, 2017; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The congregation of New Harmony was organized in |
|
|
the aftermath of the Civil War in April 1867, when 18 people came |
|
|
together to establish a new spiritual home in a community 12 |
|
|
miles northwest of Tyler; its first building, a log cabin |
|
|
structure, was erected on the site that later became the New |
|
|
Harmony Cemetery; in 1907, the church family moved to its current |
|
|
location, where worship services are held in what is now its |
|
|
sixth sanctuary; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since its inception, New Harmony Baptist has |
|
|
benefited from the leadership of a succession of able pastors, |
|
|
who have overseen the creation of numerous ministries to serve |
|
|
the needs of the congregation and the community; today, the |
|
|
church sponsors programs specifically for men, women, youth, and |
|
|
seniors, along with support groups for individuals coping with |
|
|
grief and other life situations; in addition, the church seeks to |
|
|
encourage members in their evangelism through a variety of |
|
|
mission opportunities; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Generations of area residents have looked to New |
|
|
Harmony Baptist Church for inspiration, guidance, and fellowship |
|
|
over the years, and it is a pleasure to recognize the steadfast |
|
|
faith and dedication that have sustained the church across three |
|
|
centuries; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 150th |
|
|
anniversary of New Harmony Baptist Church and extend to the |
|
|
congregation sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the church as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
