SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 110
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  George Garver
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
  of Georgetown in mourning the loss of George Garver, who died
  July 27, 2017, at the age of 85; and
         WHEREAS, George Garver was an exemplary citizen whose long
  and distinguished career in public service had a profound impact
  on the lives of countless people; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Colorado, Mr. Garver grew up in Kansas
  and attended schools in Illinois and Iowa before earning a
  doctorate in education from Michigan State University; he served
  as superintendent of schools in Houston for 25 years, and he and
  his wife moved to the new community of Sun City in 1997 for his
  retirement; and
         WHEREAS, That retirement was short-lived, as he soon began
  volunteering with a wide range of civic organizations; he served
  for a time as interim superintendent of schools and was active on
  a committee and board of directors for Sun City; he was elected
  mayor of Georgetown in 2008, and he was reelected in 2011 with 71
  percent of the vote; and
         WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the city initiated a number
  of important projects, including the Southwest Bypass, Garey Park,
  the Williams Drive project, and the Summit at Rivery; throughout
  his time in office, he was known for his collaborative spirit and
  his readiness to serve as a mentor to others; and
         WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife of 63 years, Alice, were
  blessed with two children, Stephen and Janice, who were a source
  of much pride and joy for him; and
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
  gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom and vision, his
  generous spirit, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the
  fullest will not be forgotten by those who had the privilege of
  sharing in his life; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father, and he leaves
  behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
  countless friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences
  to the bereaved family of George Garver; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of George Garver.
