A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to parental notification of class sizes at public schools |
|
|
in a district of innovation. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 12A.003, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (d) to read as follows: |
|
|
(d) A local innovation plan that provides for the exemption |
|
|
of the district from the class size limits imposed by Section 25.112 |
|
|
must require the district to provide written notification of class |
|
|
size to each parent of or person standing in parental relation to a |
|
|
student enrolled in a class that exceeds the otherwise applicable |
|
|
limit. The notification must: |
|
|
(1) specify in conspicuous bold or underlined print |
|
|
the number of students in the class; |
|
|
(2) be provided not later than the 31st day after the |
|
|
first day of each school year during the term of the district's |
|
|
designation as a district of innovation; and |
|
|
(3) be included in a regular mailing or other |
|
|
communication from the campus or district, such as information sent |
|
|
home with students. |

|
SECTION 2. Section 12A.003(d), Education Code, as added by |
|
|
this Act, applies only to a local innovation plan adopted or renewed |
|
|
on or after the effective date of this Act. A local innovation plan |
|
|
adopted or renewed before the effective date of this Act is governed |
|
|
by the law in effect on the date the plan was adopted or renewed, and |
|
|
the former law is continued in effect for that purpose. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
