A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the issuance of peace officer specialty license plates; |
|
eliminating a fee. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 504.511, Transportation Code, is |
|
transferred to Subchapter E, Chapter 504, Transportation Code, |
|
redesignated as Section 504.416, Transportation Code, and amended |
|
to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 504.416 [504.511]. PEACE OFFICERS [WOUNDED OR KILLED
|
|
IN LINE OF DUTY]. (a) The department shall issue specialty license |
|
plates for peace officers [:
|
|
[(1)
a person wounded in the line of duty as a peace
|
|
officer; or
|
|
[(2)
a surviving spouse, parent, brother, sister, or
|
|
adult child, including an adopted child or stepchild, of a person
|
|
killed in the line of duty as a peace officer]. |
|
(b) License plates issued under this section must include |
|
the words "To Protect and Serve" above an insignia depicting a |
|
yellow rose superimposed over the outline of a badge. |
|
(c) [The fee for issuance of the license plates is $20.
|
|
[(d)] In this section, "peace officer" has the meaning |
|
assigned by Section 1.07, Penal Code. |
|
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act regarding the |
|
issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of Motor |
|
Vehicles applies only to the issuance of license plates by the |
|
department for a registration period beginning on or after the |
|
effective date of this Act. For a registration period that begins |
|
before the effective date of this Act, the department shall issue |
|
license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before |
|
the effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in |
|
effect for that purpose. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
