A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to instruction in accessible design in the curriculum for |
|
an architecture degree program offered by a public institution of |
|
higher education. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 51.9721 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 51.9721. ARCHITECTURE DEGREE PROGRAM INSTRUCTION IN |
|
ACCESSIBLE DESIGN. (a) In this section, "institution of higher |
|
education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003. |
|
(b) The governing board of each institution of higher |
|
education that offers an undergraduate or graduate degree program |
|
in architecture shall include in the required curriculum for that |
|
degree program instruction regarding the requirements of the 2010 |
|
Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design or |
|
any successor standards that address accessible design of buildings |
|
or other facilities and are promulgated under the Americans with |
|
Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. Section 12101 et seq.). |
|
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|
to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in architecture |
|
offered by a public institution of higher education during an |
|
academic period that begins on or after the effective date of this |
|
Act. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
