A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to a Texas water resources program component of the
  science curriculum used in public schools in certain grade levels.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
  adding Subsection (bb) to read as follows:
         (bb)  The State Board of Education, in consultation with the
  Texas Water Development Board, shall develop a Texas water
  resources program that a school district shall use in the
  district's eighth grade science curriculum. The program must:
               (1)  address water conservation, including the
  importance of water conservation and water conservation
  strategies;
               (2)  address innovative water projects;
               (3)  address information regarding surface water,
  groundwater, and the water cycle; and
               (4)  be sequenced and paced for one semester or term.
         SECTION 2.  (a)  Not later than May 1, 2018, the State Board
  of Education shall develop a Texas water resources program as
  provided by Section 28.002(bb), Education Code, as added by this
  Act.
         (b)  A school district shall use the Texas water resources
  program developed by the State Board of Education as provided by
  Section 28.002(bb), Education Code, as added by this Act, beginning
  with the 2018-2019 school year.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
