A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to a Texas water resources program component of the |
|
science curriculum used in public schools in certain grade levels. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
|
adding Subsection (bb) to read as follows: |
|
(bb) The State Board of Education, in consultation with the |
|
Texas Water Development Board, shall develop a Texas water |
|
resources program that a school district shall use in the |
|
district's eighth grade science curriculum. The program must: |
|
(1) address water conservation, including the |
|
importance of water conservation and water conservation |
|
strategies; |
|
(2) address innovative water projects; |
|
(3) address information regarding surface water, |
|
groundwater, and the water cycle; and |
|
(4) be sequenced and paced for one semester or term. |
|
SECTION 2. (a) Not later than May 1, 2018, the State Board |
|
of Education shall develop a Texas water resources program as |
|
provided by Section 28.002(bb), Education Code, as added by this |
|
Act. |
|
(b) A school district shall use the Texas water resources |
|
program developed by the State Board of Education as provided by |
|
Section 28.002(bb), Education Code, as added by this Act, beginning |
|
with the 2018-2019 school year. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
