A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to requiring certain school districts to provide public |
|
|
school students with Internet connections and devices for home |
|
|
Internet access. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 11, Education Code, is |
|
|
amended by adding Section 11.181 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 11.181. STUDENT HOME INTERNET ACCESS. If the board of |
|
|
trustees of an independent school district adopts a policy that |
|
|
allows a teacher to post student homework on the Internet, the |
|
|
district must provide students reduced cost Internet connections |
|
|
and reduced cost or free devices related to Internet access to allow |
|
|
for Internet access at the student's home. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
