A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to enrollment of a student in a prekindergarten program |
|
|
offered by a public school district. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
| |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 29.153, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsections (g) and (h) to read as follows: |
|
|
(g) The commissioner shall adopt a uniform schedule that |
|
|
provides the period during which school districts may enroll |
|
|
students in a prekindergarten program for the following school |
|
|
year. The period for enrollment under the uniform schedule adopted |
|
|
by the commissioner must be at least 10 school days. Except as |
|
|
provided by Subsection (h), a school district may not enroll a |
|
|
student in a prekindergarten program during any other period. |
|
|
(h) A school district may adopt a policy that allows a |
|
|
student to enroll after the enrollment period if the student: |
|
|
(1) becomes a resident of the district after the |
|
|
enrollment period; and |
|
|
(2) enrolls in the district on or before the 10th day |
|
|
after the date the student becomes a resident of the district. |

|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
