A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to a study on mental health screening and treatment for |
|
|
certain inmates confined in county and municipal jails. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. (a) The Commission on Jail Standards shall |
|
|
conduct a study to evaluate: |
|
|
(1) the effectiveness of the screening practices used |
|
|
to identify, diagnose, and determine treatment for inmates with |
|
|
mental illness confined in county and municipal jails; |
|
|
(2) the effectiveness of mental health treatment |
|
|
provided to inmates with mental illness confined in county and |
|
|
municipal jails; and |
|
|
(3) the level of coordination between local mental |
|
|
health authorities and county and municipal jails in identifying |
|
|
and diagnosing inmates with mental illness. |
|
|
(b) Not later than January 1, 2019, the Commission on Jail |
|
|
Standards shall submit a written report to the legislature on the |
|
|
results of the study conducted under Subsection (a) of this |
|
|
section. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act expires September 1, 2019. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
