CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, March 1, 2017, is University of Houston--Victoria
  Day at the State Capitol, and the occasion provides a fitting
  opportunity to recognize those associated with this notable
  institution; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 1973, the University of
  Houston--Victoria boasts more than 18,000 alumni, including
  acclaimed author and artist Van G. Garrett, and is meeting higher
  education needs in a city that is home to over 67,000 people and
  that serves as a regional hub for the seven-county area known as the
  Golden Crescent; and
         WHEREAS, UHV educates approximately 4,100 students annually
  with about 1,000 graduates each year; the university offers 70
  bachelor's and master's degree programs with concentrations in the
  fields of arts and sciences, business administration, health
  professions, and human development; it was the first public
  university in Texas to offer an accelerated bachelor's degree
  program, and it has been ranked as the fourth most affordable
  college in Texas; and
         WHEREAS, The only accredited four-year university in the city
  of Victoria, UHV is also home to a number of formidable athletic
  teams competing in baseball, softball, and men's and women's golf
  and soccer; and
         WHEREAS, Under the leadership of President Raymond Victor
  Morgan Jr., UHV has continued to grow as a diverse institution, with
  the student body and faculty currently representing 23 states
  across the country and 39 countries worldwide; moreover, the school
  has been recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a
  Military Friendly campus; and
         WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the University of
  Houston--Victoria has provided its students with outstanding
  educational opportunities that provide flexibility, promote the
  financial well-being of the student, and advance the quality of
  life in the community through excellence in teaching, research, and
  service, and in so doing, it has played an important role in the
  growth and vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby recognize March 1, 2017, as University of Houston--Victoria
  Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
  sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in
  Austin.
