H.R. No. 138

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, America's military veterans hold a revered place in
the history of this country and in the hearts of its people, and on
Veterans Day 2017, residents of Texas are gathering to pay
heartfelt tribute to these brave men and women; and
WHEREAS, In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed
November 11 as Armistice Day to commemorate the anniversary of the
end of World War I and to recognize the heroism of those who died in
service to their country during that terrible conflict; the date
was eventually made a legal holiday, and in 1954, it was renamed
Veterans Day to honor all who have performed military service in our
nation's behalf, whether as a member of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine
Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard; and
WHEREAS, Service in the armed forces demands much of the men
  and women who undertake it, and the burdens assumed can be great;
hundreds of thousands of these valiant patriots have made the
ultimate sacrifice in response to their nation's call, and
countless others have sustained injuries, both visible and unseen,
that are carried with them for a lifetime; and
WHEREAS, We owe a profound debt of gratitude to those who have
committed themselves to the defense of our freedom, and Veterans
Day offers a fitting occasion to acknowledge and pay tribute to the
steadfast courage and dedication of the men and women who have
served in our nation's armed forces; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate Veterans Day 2017 and that sincere
best wishes be extended to the residents of Texas for a meaningful
  and memorable observance.
