R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, America's military veterans hold a revered place in |
|
|
the history of this country and in the hearts of its people, and on |
|
|
Veterans Day 2017, residents of Texas are gathering to pay |
|
|
heartfelt tribute to these brave men and women; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed |
|
|
November 11 as Armistice Day to commemorate the anniversary of the |
|
|
end of World War I and to recognize the heroism of those who died in |
|
|
service to their country during that terrible conflict; the date |
|
|
was eventually made a legal holiday, and in 1954, it was renamed |
|
|
Veterans Day to honor all who have performed military service in our |
|
|
nation's behalf, whether as a member of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine |
|
|
Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Service in the armed forces demands much of the men |
|
|
and women who undertake it, and the burdens assumed can be great; |
|
|
hundreds of thousands of these valiant patriots have made the |
|
|
ultimate sacrifice in response to their nation's call, and |
|
|
countless others have sustained injuries, both visible and unseen, |
|
|
that are carried with them for a lifetime; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, We owe a profound debt of gratitude to those who have |
|
|
committed themselves to the defense of our freedom, and Veterans |
|
|
Day offers a fitting occasion to acknowledge and pay tribute to the |
|
|
steadfast courage and dedication of the men and women who have |
|
|
served in our nation's armed forces; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate Veterans Day 2017 and that sincere |
|
|
best wishes be extended to the residents of Texas for a meaningful |
|
|
and memorable observance. |
