WHEREAS, National Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists
Week is being celebrated from January 22 through 28, 2017, in
recognition of the crucial work performed by practitioners of one
of the oldest nursing specializations; and
WHEREAS, Nurses first administered anesthesia to wounded
soldiers during the Civil War, and nurse-anesthetists have been the
main providers of anesthesia to U.S. military personnel on the
front lines since World War I; their care continues to be essential
to saving the lives of service personnel wounded in current
  conflicts overseas; and
WHEREAS, Today, CRNAs safely administer approximately 43
million doses of anesthesia to patients each year; as the primary
source of anesthesia care in rural areas, they enable medical
facilities in underserved communities to maintain obstetric,
surgical, and trauma-stabilization capabilities; in some states,
CRNAs are the sole providers of anesthesia services in nearly 100
  percent of rural hospitals; and
WHEREAS, These dedicated professionals practice in every
setting in which anesthesia is delivered, from traditional
hospitals to dental and podiatric offices and ambulatory surgical
centers, as well as military and Veterans Administration treatment
facilities; currently, more than 4,000 CRNAs are licensed to
  practice in Texas; and
WHEREAS, Nurse-anesthetists play a trusted and vital role in
our state's and nation's health care systems, providing for an
expanded scope of medical care in many parts of the country, and the
observance of National CRNA Week offers an opportunity to honor the
members of this profession for their steadfast commitment to their
  calling; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize January 22-28, 2017, as National

appreciation to the nurse-anesthetists of Texas for their crucial
contribution to health care in the Lone Star State.
