R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 106th anniversary of the birth of Ronald Reagan
  falls on February 6, 2017, offering a fitting opportunity to
  reflect on the tremendous legacy of the nation's 40th president;
  and
         WHEREAS, The son of Jack and Nelle Reagan, Ronald Wilson
  Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, in 1911, and grew up in Dixon;
  he enjoyed tremendous success in the entertainment industry as a
  sports announcer, film actor, and television host before embarking
  on a second career in public service; in 1966, he was elected to the
  first of his two terms as governor of California; and
         WHEREAS, This deft and resolute leader ascended to the
  presidency in 1980 and began to vigorously address the many
  challenges that faced a troubled country, among them inflation,
  high unemployment, and the ongoing cold war with the Soviet Union;
  he worked to promote economic growth and lower taxes while building
  a stronger national defense, and his bold and effective initiatives
  gained widespread approval; in 1984, he was returned to office by
  one of the largest margins in the history of presidential
  elections; and
         WHEREAS, The economy continued to expand during President
  Reagan's second term, as he guided a major revision of the tax code
  and maintained a sharp focus on government accountability; while
  acting as a steward of domestic prosperity, he practiced a muscular
  foreign policy of "peace through strength"; he devoted U.S. forces
  to the task of confronting international terrorism, and he played a
  crucial role in the ultimate breakup of the U.S.S.R.; and
         WHEREAS, Through his monumental accomplishments both at home
  and abroad, Ronald Reagan restored American confidence and earned a
  special place in the history of our nation and the world; although
  he passed away on June 5, 2004, his enormous legacy still resonates
  profoundly and serves as an enduring source of inspiration to
  leaders of today; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of President Ronald
  Reagan and commemorate February 6, 2017, the 106th anniversary of
  his birth.
