R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Phil Danaher, head football coach and athletic |
|
director at Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, earned the |
|
distinction of becoming the winningest coach in Texas high school |
|
football history with his 427th career victory on November 3, 2016; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, This record-breaking win came in front of a home |
|
crowd at Wildcat Stadium in the District 30-5A title game against |
|
Flour Bluff High School; following three quarters of evenly matched |
|
play, the Wildcats erupted in the final frame, notching three |
|
touchdowns to clinch the district crown with a final score of 31-7; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Danaher graduated from Harlingen High School, |
|
where he participated in four sports and was named the football |
|
team's most valuable player for two consecutive years; awarded a |
|
football scholarship to Angelo State University, he completed his |
|
degree there in 1971 and then accepted a position as assistant |
|
football coach at Edison High School in San Antonio; in 1974, he was |
|
hired as athletic director and head football coach at Dilley High |
|
School; he later served in those roles at Hamshire-Fannett High |
|
School for six years before assuming the same positions in the |
|
Calallen Independent School District in 1984; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his second year at Calallen, Coach Danaher |
|
guided the Wildcats to their first postseason in nearly three |
|
decades, sparking a run of 32 consecutive playoff berths, the |
|
longest active streak in Texas; over the course of his tenure, the |
|
Wildcats have made 11 appearances in the state semifinals, and they |
|
advanced all the way to the finals in 2005 and 2016; his outstanding |
|
legacy was recognized in 2009 when the field inside Wildcat Stadium |
|
was renamed in his honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Coach Danaher is blessed with |
|
the love and support of his wife, Anita, and he takes tremendous |
|
pride in their three children, Cody, Wes, and Brittany; and |
|
WHEREAS, By setting a new standard of success, Coach Danaher |
|
has burnished his reputation as one of the top high school football |
|
coaches in the Lone Star State, and he may take justifiable pride in |
|
his unparalleled record of achievement; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Phil Danaher on becoming the |
|
winningest high school football coach in Texas history and extend |
|
to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Coach Danaher as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
