R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed educator and leading
  military scholar drew to a close with the passing of John
  F. Guilmartin Jr. on March 10, 2016, at the age of 75; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Chicago on September 18, 1940, Joe
  Guilmartin grew up in San Antonio, where his father was a flight
  instructor; he went on to study at the United States Air Force
  Academy, and after finishing flight training and obtaining a degree
  in aerospace engineering embarked on a 21-year career in the air
  force flying search-and-rescue helicopters; over the course of two
  tours in Vietnam, Lieutenant Colonel Guilmartin logged more than
  120 missions and assisted in the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in
  Saigon, and for his actions, he was awarded the Air Medal with five
  oak-leaf clusters and two Silver Stars; and
         WHEREAS, Joe Guilmartin received his master's degree in 1969
  and his Ph.D. in 1971 from Princeton University; he taught history
  at the Air Force Academy from 1970 to 1974, and, following his
  retirement from the military, he accepted teaching positions at the
  Naval War College and Rice University; he also directed the space
  shuttle history project at the Johnson Space Center in Houston; in
  1987, he joined the history department at Ohio State University,
  where he served on the faculty for nearly three decades; and
         WHEREAS, A recognized authority on military history and
  technology, Dr. Guilmartin published several books on those topics
  as well as numerous articles in scholarly journals; he was also a
  guest lecturer at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a
  trustee of the Society for Military History, and he was a recipient
  of the prestigious Goodpaster Prize, which recognized his
  achievements as a soldier-scholar; and
         WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Guilmartin enjoyed the
  love and support of his wife, Hannelore, and he was the proud father
  of two daughters, Lore Guilmartin and Eugenia Guilmartin, who
  followed in her father's footsteps to become a colonel in the U.S.
  Army; and
         WHEREAS, Admired for his scholarly contributions, his keen
  wit, and the generous support that he gave to both his students and
  colleagues, Joe Guilmartin was an inspiring role model and an
  invaluable asset to his field, and his influence will be felt for
  many years to come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. John F. Guilmartin
  Jr. and extend sincere sympathy to his relatives and friends; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joe
  Guilmartin.
