H.R. No. 343

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Panhandle Herald is marking the 130th
anniversary of its founding on July 22, 2017; and
WHEREAS, On that date in 1887, the inaugural edition of the
Herald was published by Henry Harold Brookes, a former Episcopal
missionary who served as a pastor in Houston before he decided to
pursue a career in journalism; after relocating to Panhandle, he
initially operated the weekly paper out of a tent, using a wooden
printing press that he built himself; the publication quickly
became an integral part of the community, reporting vital news and
chronicling the daily experiences of local residents; and
WHEREAS, During the decades that followed, the Herald
continued to serve as an essential source of information for Carson
County citizens, and it ultimately became a historic institution in
its own right; it is the oldest newspaper in continuous operation in
the Panhandle region of Texas and one of the area's
  longest-surviving businesses; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the Herald has passed through the
hands of a number of owners, including such prominent figures as
Robert Lee Satterwhite, who later served as speaker of the Texas
House of Representatives; today, the paper benefits from the able
leadership of Shaun and Frank Wink, who together purchased the
publication in August 2009; the Herald remains dedicated to
covering the people and events of Panhandle, White Deer, and
surrounding areas, and the paper has expanded its reach through
online subscriptions and social media; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Panhandle Herald has
provided valuable local reportage to its readership, and it is
indeed a pleasure to honor this esteemed newspaper for the high
  regard it has enjoyed in its community during the past 13 decades;
  now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 130th anniversary of the
Panhandle Herald and extend to all those associated with the
newspaper sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
  further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Panhandle Herald as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
