R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Weatherford are gathering in |
|
Austin on February 27, 2017, to celebrate Weatherford Day at the |
|
State Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, Situated on the crest between the Trinity and Brazos |
|
Valleys, this frontier settlement was named for Jefferson |
|
Weatherford, a Texas senator who coauthored the bill to establish |
|
Parker County; Weatherford was incorporated in 1858, and as the |
|
county seat, it experienced significant growth in the last two |
|
decades of the 19th century, spurred by the construction of three |
|
railroads, which made it a prime retail and shipping point for area |
|
ranchers and farmers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today a city of approximately 30,000, Weatherford |
|
enjoys its proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex while |
|
retaining its small-town, family-oriented charm; the population |
|
benefits from access to outstanding medical care at Weatherford |
|
Regional Medical Center and educational opportunities provided by |
|
Weatherford College, which was established in 1869 and is the |
|
oldest community college in the Southwest; and |
|
WHEREAS, Weatherford offers numerous attractions for |
|
residents and visitors alike, including Clark Gardens Botanical |
|
Park, the Doss Heritage & Culture Center, and the Museum of the |
|
Americas, and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the Town Creek Hike and |
|
Bike Trail and water sports on Lake Weatherford; moreover, the |
|
downtown historic district is host to numerous unique stores, and |
|
it is the site of the old-time Farmers Market, as well as First |
|
Monday Trade Days, one of the oldest open-air markets in Texas, with |
|
a history spanning more than 155 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, The people of Weatherford further celebrate their |
|
rich heritage with the annual Parker County Peach Festival, the |
|
city's largest one-day event; named the Peach Capital of Texas, |
|
Weatherford draws more than 35,000 attendees to take part in the |
|
festival; additionally, because of its proximity to the |
|
headquarters of the National Cutting Horse Association and its |
|
major events, the city has gained recognition as the Cutting Horse |
|
Capital of the World; and |
|
WHEREAS, Honoring their vibrant past as they embrace the |
|
opportunities of the future, the citizens of Weatherford are |
|
justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
|
honor them and their contributions to the story of the Lone Star |
|
State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2017, as Weatherford Day |
|
at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
|
best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
