R E S O L U T I O N

|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Rebecca A. Palacios is being recognized as the |
|
|
Educator of the Year by LULAC Council No. 1 in Corpus Christi at the |
|
|
organization's 21st annual awards banquet on February 16, 2017; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, An alumna of The University of Texas at Austin and |
|
|
Texas A&M--Corpus Christi, Dr. Palacios worked for nearly three and |
|
|
a half decades in the Corpus Christi Independent School District, |
|
|
teaching prekindergarten through third grade until her retirement |
|
|
in 2010; today, she owns the Palacios Educational Consulting firm |
|
|
and serves as a senior curriculum advisor for ABCmouse.com; she has |
|
|
further distinguished herself as a cofounder and vice chair of the |
|
|
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and in 1997, |
|
|
she earned the distinction of becoming the first Texan of Hispanic |
|
|
descent to receive National Board Certification; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Palacios is widely recognized as a pioneer in |
|
|
the field of dual-language learning, and she has been honored with a |
|
|
host of accolades, including the 1987 Teacher of the Year Award from |
|
|
CCISD, a Y Women in Careers Award from the local YWCA, the Senator |
|
|
Carlos Truan Award of Distinction for Bilingual Teacher of the Year |
|
|
from the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and a LULAC |
|
|
Outstanding Community Member Award; moreover, in 2014, she became |
|
|
the first Latina to be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of |
|
|
Fame; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The strength of our communities is enhanced by the |
|
|
devoted efforts of individuals such as Rebecca Palacios, whose |
|
|
tireless work has contributed immeasurably to the quality of life |
|
|
in the Corpus Christi area and beyond; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Rebecca A. Palacios on her |
|
|
receipt of the 2017 Educator of the Year award from LULAC Council |
|
|
No. 1 and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
|
|
it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Dr. Palacios as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
