R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Saherish Surani has been named a 2016 Corpus Christi |
|
Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished Scholar in the |
|
service and leadership category; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished |
|
Scholars program was established to reward local students who have |
|
demonstrated excellence in specific areas of achievement; since its |
|
inception in 1988, hundreds of young men and women have been |
|
selected for this prestigious honor, and each of the 2016 winners |
|
received a $1,000 scholarship to help fund their college studies; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Zehra Surani and Dr. Salim Surani, |
|
Saherish Surani ranks first in her class of 304 students at Veterans |
|
Memorial High School, with an impressive 4.96 grade point average; |
|
in addition to excelling academically, she is a competitive |
|
pianist, president of her school's student council and National |
|
Honor Society chapter, and vice chair of the city's Human Relations |
|
Commission; in 2013, she cofounded iConquer, a program that uses |
|
puppet shows, interactive skits, dances, jingles, crafting |
|
activities, and animated short films to teach prekindergarteners |
|
about healthy eating habits; over the past few years, Ms. Surani |
|
and her team have raised $140,000 in funds and reached more than |
|
20,000 children in 50 elementary schools and day-care programs; and |
|
WHEREAS, This outstanding young Texan has pursued her goals |
|
with tremendous dedication, and she may take great pride in all that |
|
she has accomplished as she looks ahead to a future bright with |
|
promise; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Saherish Surani on her selection as |
|
a 2016 Corpus Christi Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished |
|
Scholar and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Surani as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
