R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, Libby Averyt is retiring as president of the Corpus |
|
|
Christi Caller-Times on February 17, 2017, drawing to a close a |
|
|
notable tenure with the organization that has spanned more than |
|
|
three decades; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Averyt graduated with a bachelor's degree in |
|
|
journalism from The University of Texas at Austin and a master's |
|
|
degree in communication from Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi; |
|
|
she began her career with the Caller-Times in 1986 as a night-shift |
|
|
police reporter, and over the next quarter century, she steadily |
|
|
advanced through the staff ranks to become the executive editor; a |
|
|
highly esteemed journalist, she received the prestigious Edward |
|
|
Willis Scripps Award for Distinguished Service to the First |
|
|
Amendment in 1990; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In December 2010, Ms. Averyt was promoted to vice |
|
|
president of advertising, a position she held for four years before |
|
|
being named president and publisher, earning the distinction of |
|
|
becoming the first woman to serve as the newspaper's chief |
|
|
executive; in that role, she has overseen the operations not only of |
|
|
the Caller-Times but also of publications in Abilene, San Angelo, |
|
|
and Wichita Falls; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Averyt has been supported |
|
|
by the love and encouragement of her husband, Charles Kaffie Jr., |
|
|
and their five children, Grace, Avery, William, Lauren, and |
|
|
Charles; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Libby Averyt's vision, leadership, and commitment |
|
|
to excellence have greatly benefited the Corpus Christi |
|
|
Caller-Times, and she may indeed reflect with pride on all she has |
|
|
achieved as she embarks on the next exciting chapter of her life; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Libby Averyt on her retirement as |
|
|
president of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and extend to her |
|
|
sincere best wishes for continued happiness and fulfillment; and, |
|
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Ms. Averyt as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
