R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Libby Averyt is retiring as president of the Corpus
  Christi Caller-Times on February 17, 2017, drawing to a close a
  notable tenure with the organization that has spanned more than
  three decades; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Averyt graduated with a bachelor's degree in
  journalism from The University of Texas at Austin and a master's
  degree in communication from Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi;
  she began her career with the Caller-Times in 1986 as a night-shift
  police reporter, and over the next quarter century, she steadily
  advanced through the staff ranks to become the executive editor; a
  highly esteemed journalist, she received the prestigious Edward
  Willis Scripps Award for Distinguished Service to the First
  Amendment in 1990; and
         WHEREAS, In December 2010, Ms. Averyt was promoted to vice
  president of advertising, a position she held for four years before
  being named president and publisher, earning the distinction of
  becoming the first woman to serve as the newspaper's chief
  executive; in that role, she has overseen the operations not only of
  the Caller-Times but also of publications in Abilene, San Angelo,
  and Wichita Falls; and
         WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Averyt has been supported
  by the love and encouragement of her husband, Charles Kaffie Jr.,
  and their five children, Grace, Avery, William, Lauren, and
  Charles; and
         WHEREAS, Libby Averyt's vision, leadership, and commitment
  to excellence have greatly benefited the Corpus Christi
  Caller-Times, and she may indeed reflect with pride on all she has
  achieved as she embarks on the next exciting chapter of her life;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Libby Averyt on her retirement as
  president of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and extend to her
  sincere best wishes for continued happiness and fulfillment; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Averyt as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
