R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, pastor of
  Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, is serving as Pastor of
  the Day for the Texas House of Representatives on March 17, 2017;
  and
         WHEREAS, The son of the Reverend Frederick D. Haynes Jr. and
  Lynetta Haynes-Oliver, Frederick Douglass Haynes III was born in
  Dallas on November 10, 1960; after graduating from Abraham Lincoln
  High School in San Francisco, he earned his bachelor's degree with
  honors from Bishop College and his master's degree from
  Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; he later went on to
  receive his doctorate in ministry from the Graduate Theological
  Foundation and to study at Christ Church at Oxford University; and
         WHEREAS, Since 1983, Dr. Haynes has ably led Friendship-West
  Baptist Church, and under his careful guidance, it has grown from a
  group of fewer than 100 members into a flourishing congregation of
  more than 12,000 worshippers; known for his social activism in the
  Dallas community, he has been a passionate advocate for education
  and has been deeply involved in initiatives to foster youth
  development and to combat poverty and violence; and
         WHEREAS, A highly respected figure nationally and
  internationally, Dr. Haynes has led outreach and development
  efforts in Africa and Haiti and has been called on to speak at a
  number of high-profile events, including the 2011 Congressional
  Black Caucus Prayer Breakfast and a 2013 memorial service for
  Nelson Mandela; in addition to his other responsibilities, he lends
  his time and talents to such organizations as the Samuel DeWitt
  Proctor Conference, the Conference of National Black Churches, and
  the National Action Network; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Haynes has inspired countless
  people with his message of grace and goodwill, and it is a pleasure
  to welcome him to this chamber; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III for his
  service as Pastor of the Day and extend to him sincere best wishes
  for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Haynes as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
