R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Members of New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist
  Church in Houston are celebrating the 100th anniversary of their
  church's founding in 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Organized in 1917 by a group of charter members and
  its first pastor, J. A. Alford, the congregation initially met in a
  small house on Hailey Street; the membership quickly outgrew the
  space, and a larger house on Gregg Street was purchased and
  converted into a chapel; the church subsequently acquired several
  nearby properties and dedicated a new place of worship in 1974;
  today, the New Mount Calvary campus includes classrooms, a
  gymnasium, a fellowship hall, and a food bank, in addition to its
  main and youth sanctuaries; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, New Mount Calvary has benefited from
  the dedicated efforts of a number of outstanding clergymen; Pastor
  Alford was succeeded by the Reverend E. A. Baldridge in 1956, and he
  served until 1980, when the Reverend Dr. Willie Jones began a
  distinguished tenure that spanned nearly 33 years; the Reverend
  Christopher C. Moore assumed the pulpit in 2014, and under his
  leadership, the church has continued a long tradition of helping
  those in need, establishing new ministries to supplement its many
  other outreach initiatives; and
         WHEREAS, New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church has long
  served as a source of inspiration and spiritual guidance to those
  who worship there, and its continued existence is a testament to the
  unwavering commitment of its members and clergy, both past and
  present; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of New Mount
  Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and extend to the congregation
  sincere best wishes for many more years of shared prayer and
  fellowship; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church as an
  expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
