R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Frank J. Nemec, an esteemed citizen of West, is |
|
visiting the State Capitol on March 16, 2017; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of Paul and Mary Nemec, Frank Nemec was born |
|
in the community of Cottonwood, near West, on October 17, 1914; he |
|
grew up speaking both Polish and Czech and attended St. Joseph and |
|
Cottonwood schools; as a young man, he farmed cotton and other crops |
|
for his family and played semipro baseball for Cottonwood; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Nemec enlisted in the United States Marine Corps |
|
during World War II and took part in the amphibious landings at New |
|
Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa; he further served in Guadalcanal, |
|
New Guinea, Pavuvu, and Goodenough Island, and after 28 straight |
|
months in the war zone, he served a three-month tour of occupation |
|
duty in China; his military awards include a Good Conduct Medal and |
|
the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and his unit, Company B of the |
|
1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, was awarded the |
|
Presidential Unit Citation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following his return to civilian life, Mr. Nemec |
|
performed sewing machine maintenance and repair in Decatur, Dallas, |
|
West, and Waco for the Lorch Manufacturing Company, Wolf |
|
Manufacturing, Nardis Sportswear, and the Crawford-Austin |
|
Manufacturing Company; he also repaired home machines for more than |
|
60 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Frank Nemec married the former Marie Raby on |
|
November 26, 1953, and they became the parents of four children; the |
|
couple operated Family Fabrics, a retail store, in downtown West |
|
from 1965 until 1980; Mr. Nemec served as a director of the West |
|
Chamber of Commerce and the West Industrial Foundation and as a |
|
member of the St. Mary's school board; a member, also, of the West |
|
Baseball Association, he was instrumental in raising funds for the |
|
West Baseball Complex; in addition, he holds membership in KJT |
|
Society No. 31 and American Legion Post No. 478 and life membership |
|
in VFW Post No. 4819, Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305, |
|
Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3, and the 1st Marine Division |
|
Association; he is also a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church |
|
of the Assumption; and |
|
WHEREAS, Few citizens can claim such a lengthy record of |
|
civic engagement as Frank Nemec, and it is indeed a pleasure to |
|
recognize him on the occasion of West Day at the State Capitol; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Frank J. Nemec for his contributions to |
|
West and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Nemec as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
