R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Nelly and Mariselle Quijano and the teams at their
  McDonald's restaurants in the Houston area have won distinction as
  the 2017 Business of the Year from the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce;
  and
         WHEREAS, Born in Cuba, Nelly Quijano fled to freedom in the
  United States at the age of 16; she married another Cuban exile,
  Dominic Quijano, and the couple operated a textile factory in New
  Jersey before relocating to Houston and opening their first
  McDonald's franchise in 1984; after noticing the popularity of
  breakfast tacos among Houstonians, they began selling their own
  version of the staple fare, and this innovation eventually led to
  the addition of the breakfast burrito to McDonald's national menu;
  and
         WHEREAS, After Mr. Quijano's death, Mrs. Quijano's daughter
  Mariselle joined her in the business, and their enterprise has
  since grown to encompass 27 McDonald's restaurants and more than
  1,500 employees; the Quijanos' success has won them recognition as
  a McDonald's Regional Strategic Leadership Team and as Customer
  Satisfaction Regional Pillar Leads, and they have received such
  accolades as the coveted Ronald McDonald and Golden Arch Awards;
  and
         WHEREAS, In addition to growing a thriving business, this
  remarkable mother and daughter have also dedicated themselves to
  giving back; since 1985, their company has distributed 90
  scholarships each year through the Houston Ronald McDonald House
  Charities; Mariselle Quijano serves on the board of trustees of the
  Pasadena Independent School District, and the Quijanos are active
  supporters of the annual McDonald's Texas Invitational Basketball
  Tournament, which has generated more than $1 million for the
  Pasadena ISD Education Foundation; in 2016, the Quijanos initiated
  "McTeacher's Nights," which also raise funds for the foundation;
  moreover, they recently donated $10,000 toward the purchase of
  additional protective gear for officers of the Pasadena Police
  Department; and
         WHEREAS, For their exceptional civic engagement and
  philanthropy, Nelly Quijano has been recognized as PISD's
  Distinguished Citizen of the Year, and Mariselle Quijano has been
  honored with the PISD Distinguished Alumnus Award; in 2014,
  Mariselle was named Citizen of the Year by the Pasadena Chamber of
  Commerce; and
         WHEREAS, By creating jobs and sharing the bounty of their
  hard work through acts of charity and service, Nelly and Mariselle
  Quijano have proven themselves to be leaders in both their industry
  and their community, and they are truly deserving of this
  prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Nelly and Mariselle Quijano and
  their McDonald's teams on receiving the 2017 Business of the Year
  award from the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and extend to them and
  their employees sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Nelly and Mariselle Quijano as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
