R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly
  cause for celebration, and Lucy Agnes Kocurek Pierce of West
  Columbia marked this momentous milestone in her life on January 21,
  2017, to the delight of her family and friends; and
         WHEREAS, Born to Frank and Johanna Kocurek in El Campo in
  1917, the former Lucy Kocurek married Dalton F. Pierce on January 8,
  1935, and they went on to share nearly seven decades together; they
  became the proud parents of three children, Ann, Janice Lynn, and
  Deborah Grace; in 1942, they settled in West Columbia, where they
  built a home with the help of relatives and friends; Mrs. Pierce
  worked in grocery stores before turning her sewing hobby into a
  business, and over the years, she made many lovely wedding gowns and
  prom dresses; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Pierce is a founding member of St. John's
  Catholic Church, and she is still very active in the congregation;
  she also mentored young women as a Girl Scout leader; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of many talents and interests, Mrs. Pierce
  has created beautiful oil paintings, watercolors, and pencil
  sketches over the years; she also became a life master at bridge in
  2000 and adds to her master points by playing twice a week; fond of
  traveling, she has visited 49 of the 50 states, as well as the
  Vatican and several foreign countries; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Pierce played softball in her younger years,
  and she remains an avid sports fan; she likes attending Roughneck
  football games, and in 2002, she carried the Olympic torch on its
  passage through Beaumont; on January 18, 2017, she was an honored
  guest of the Houston Rockets, and she was presented with the
  game-winning ball by James Harden; today, she continues to live in
  her home of more than 70 years and enjoys maintaining her flower
  beds and landscaping; and
         WHEREAS, Blessed with the affection of a host of loved ones
  and sustained by her strong faith, Lucy Pierce has gracefully
  reached the century mark and continues to enrich the lives of all
  who are fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Lucy Pierce on the joyous occasion
  of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for
  continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Pierce as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
