R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Lorugene Young of Houston has distinguished herself |
|
through her commitment to serving her community; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Ruston, Louisiana, Lorugene Young moved |
|
to Houston to attend Texas Southern University, where she earned |
|
her master's and doctoral degrees; she went on to enjoy a 40-year |
|
career in education, in which she taught history, English, and |
|
physical education and also coached for more than 20 years; in 2012, |
|
she retired from North Forest Independent School District; and |
|
WHEREAS, Almost three decades ago, this outstanding Texan |
|
began collecting and distributing Christmas gifts to local children |
|
in need; what started as a small project out of her home has since |
|
grown into the largest toy drive in Harris County, called |
|
Operation: Stocking Stuffer, which today is hosted by the Houston |
|
Fire Department and KPRC Channel 2; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Young has further benefited her fellow |
|
residents over the years by organizing school supply giveaways, |
|
Easter egg hunts, and clothes drives, and she established a |
|
scholarship program for high school students pursuing higher |
|
education at Prairie View A&M University; and |
|
WHEREAS, With great compassion, dedication, and initiative, |
|
Lorugene Young has made a positive difference in many lives, and it |
|
is indeed fitting to recognize her many contributions to the city of |
|
Houston and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Lorugene Young for her service to the |
|
Houston community and extend to her sincere best wishes for the |
|
future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Young as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
