R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The iNaturalist Teacher Workshop developed by the |
|
|
Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve in Corpus Christi has been recognized |
|
|
with the 2017 Lone Star Recreation Programming Achievement Award |
|
|
from the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS); and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A nonprofit organization devoted to advancing the |
|
|
profession of parks, recreation, and leisure services in Texas, |
|
|
TRAPS annually presents a series of awards to its members; the Lone |
|
|
Star Programming Award recognizes the creation of innovative |
|
|
programs that serve the community and that make efficient use of an |
|
|
organization's budget and staff time; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Learning Center is |
|
|
a component of the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department |
|
|
that is designed to connect citizens with the natural world through |
|
|
a variety of hands-on activities; utilizing the iNaturalist app |
|
|
allows visitors to upload smartphone photos of plants, fungi, and |
|
|
wildlife for identification by other users, who include biologists |
|
|
and naturalists; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, While encouraging members of the public to engage |
|
|
more deeply with nature, the application also enables lay |
|
|
individuals to help the preserve assemble a catalog of the myriad |
|
|
life-forms that make the Oso Bay Wetlands their home; as of 2017, |
|
|
the application has garnered more than 1,100 observations of over |
|
|
430 different species; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The iNaturalist Teacher Workshop uses |
|
|
state-of-the-art technology to enhance people's appreciation of |
|
|
the beauty and diversity of nature and to bring the citizens of |
|
|
Corpus Christi closer to the riches in their own backyard, and it is |
|
|
truly deserving of this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and |
|
|
Learning Center on winning the 2017 Lone Star Recreation |
|
|
Programming Achievement Award and extend to all those associated |
|
|
with the preserve sincere best wishes for continued success; and, |
|
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve as an expression of high |
|
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
