R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Tejano star Michael Salgado has distinguished |
|
himself for more than two decades through his outstanding |
|
contributions to Texas music; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Barrancas, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Ernesto and |
|
Alice Salgado, Michael Salgado grew up in Big Spring, Stanton, and |
|
other West Texas towns; he started singing with his father's |
|
conjunto band when he was in grade school, and a few years later he |
|
picked up his dad's piano accordion and taught himself to play by |
|
listening to Ramon Ayala's recordings; as a southpaw, he developed |
|
his own approach to the instrument, flipping it upside down and |
|
learning the scales in reverse; his virtuosic, unconventional style |
|
earned him the nickname "el Zurdo de Oro," or "the Golden Lefty"; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Salgado formed his own band when he was 19, with |
|
his brothers Ernie and James; introducing the classic norteño sound |
|
to a new generation, he soared to the top of radio playlists in the |
|
United States and Mexico in 1995 with his cover of "Cruz de Madera"; |
|
his next hit, "Sin Ella," spent 33 weeks in Billboard magazine's |
|
Latin Top Ten, and his subsequent run of successful singles |
|
included the Number One Tejano song of 2001, "Ya No Voy a Aguantar"; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, With two decades of recording experience behind him, |
|
Mr. Salgado launched his own label, Zurdo Records, and he ventured |
|
into country music with such appealing tracks as "Honky Tonks and |
|
Cantinas," which was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2012 |
|
Tejano Music Awards, despite its genre; he has won numerous |
|
accolades over the years, among them the 2007 Latin Grammy Award for |
|
Best Norteño Album, the 2012 Billboard Latin Music Award for Best |
|
Album Regional Mexican, and a host of Tejano Music Awards in the |
|
vocalist, album, song, duo, and entertainer categories; in 2016, |
|
Por Cielo Y Tierra brought him the Latin Grammy for Best Tejano |
|
Album, along with two Tejano Music Awards, for Best Vocalist and |
|
Best Norteño Album; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Salgado has also benefited the community through |
|
his own charitable organization, the Para Mi Gente Foundation, as |
|
well as through his efforts in behalf of the Children's Shelter of |
|
San Antonio, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and the Make-A-Wish |
|
Foundation; and |
|
WHEREAS, A gifted performer and recording artist, Michael |
|
Salgado carries on a vibrant tradition while bringing joy to |
|
innumerable people through his music; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Michael Salgado for his accomplishments |
|
and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Salgado as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
