R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Members of First Methodist Church of Chillicothe |
|
gathered on May 21, 2016, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the |
|
construction of their church; and |
|
WHEREAS, Organized in 1886 in the Jackson Springs community, |
|
the congregation was served in its early days by circuit riders |
|
C. T. Neese and J. T. Hosmer; the church was relocated to |
|
Chillicothe not long after the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway |
|
reached the town in the following year; eventually, the |
|
congregation found a new site, and prominent architect Rockwell |
|
Henry Stuckey was hired to design a building, which was completed in |
|
1916; and |
|
WHEREAS, The church's classical elements include a cornice, |
|
columns, and eaves, and it also features an octagonal dome and |
|
stained glass windows that were crafted in Germany; in 1998, the |
|
building was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark by |
|
the Texas Historical Commission; and |
|
WHEREAS, Countless area residents have looked to the First |
|
Methodist Church of Chillicothe for spiritual guidance for over a |
|
century, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church and the |
|
rich history of its venerable house of worship; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First |
|
Methodist Church of Chillicothe building and extend to the members |
|
of the congregation sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the congregation as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
