R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, The members of the Reddy-McClellan Veterans of |
|
|
Foreign Wars Post No. 8789 in Bowie celebrated the organization's |
|
|
70th anniversary on December 10, 2016; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Named for two local veterans, Wendell McClellan and |
|
|
Lieutenant Kenneth Reddy, the Bowie VFW post was founded by 25 |
|
|
charter members in 1946 to help soldiers returning home from World |
|
|
War II; it was originally housed in a building on Wise Street but |
|
|
subsequently moved to its present location on East Nelson Street; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Under the skilled leadership of post commander Gary |
|
|
Stephens, VFW Post 8789 is continuing its long tradition of service |
|
|
to area veterans by providing counseling and transportation to |
|
|
clinics in Bridgeport and Dallas; other initiatives include a |
|
|
winter clothing drive for homeless veterans, collecting Christmas |
|
|
presents for the former military members living in a local nursing |
|
|
home, and working with the community to construct a veterans |
|
|
monument at Pelham Park; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Bowie VFW post also contributes to the wider |
|
|
community by sponsoring the local Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops; |
|
|
moreover, the group recently hosted a spaghetti dinner, donating |
|
|
the proceeds to the fire department's annual toy drive, and the VFW |
|
|
meeting rooms are made available to any nonprofit organization free |
|
|
of charge; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to the |
|
|
brave men and women who risk their lives to protect our safety and |
|
|
liberty, and VFW Post 8789 is indeed deserving of recognition for |
|
|
its efforts in behalf of area veterans; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 70th anniversary of the |
|
|
Reddy-McClellan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8789 in Bowie and |
|
|
extend to its members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Bowie VFW post as an expression of high regard by |
|
|
the Texas House of Representatives. |
