R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The observance of National Travel and Tourism Week
  from May 7 to 13, 2017, provides a welcome opportunity to recognize
  the significant contributions that local tourist agencies such as
  the Alvin Convention and Visitors Bureau make to the prosperity of
  their communities; and
         WHEREAS, One of the largest private-sector employers in the
  United States, the travel industry supported 15.1 million jobs in
  2015, including 8.1 million specifically in the travel sector and
  6.9 million in related fields; that same year, foreign and domestic
  tourists in this country spent nearly $950 billion and generated,
  altogether, $2.1 trillion in economic output; and
         WHEREAS, Tourism is likewise one of the biggest industries in
  the State of Texas; in 2015, that sector of the economy generated
  $68.7 billion in direct travel spending and $6.2 billion in state
  and local tax revenues and supported 1.1 million jobs; and
         WHEREAS, The city of Alvin has shared in this abundance,
  thanks in large measure to the efforts of its convention and
  visitors bureau to attract and assist tourists and convention
  attendees; one notable sign of the bureau's success is the growth
  of hotel and sales tax revenue, which mirrors the increase in the
  number of visitors; in 2015, more than 70,000 out-of-towners
  enjoyed Alvin over the course of spring break alone, and major
  spring festivals drew thousands of participants; the economic
  benefits deriving from this influx of visitors are felt throughout
  the community; and
         WHEREAS, The tourism sector plays a critical role in
  sustaining the vitality of the Lone Star State, and organizations
  such as the Alvin Convention and Visitors Bureau are essential to
  the strength of this important industry; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the staff of the Alvin Convention and
  Visitors Bureau on the occasion of National Travel and Tourism Week
  and extend to all those associated with the bureau sincere best
  wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Alvin Convention and Visitors Bureau as an
  expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
