R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The citizens of Texas lost a courageous and
  dedicated law enforcement officer with the death of U.S. Senior
  Border Patrol Agent Travis W. Attaway on September 21, 2004, at the
  age of 31; and
         WHEREAS, The son of Tom and Dorothy Attaway, Travis Attaway
  was born in San Antonio on May 3, 1973, and he grew up in the
  close-knit community of D'Hanis, surrounded by his extended family
  and lifelong friends; following his graduation from D'Hanis High
  School, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Texas State
  University before applying to the U.S. Border Patrol; and
         WHEREAS, Agent Attaway graduated from the agency's academy in
  Charleston, South Carolina, on April 5, 1998, as a member of Class
  359 and was assigned to the Harlingen Border Patrol Station; he and
  another agent lost their lives in the line of duty when their boat
  capsized in the fast-moving waters of the Rio Grande while
  assisting in a patrol operation; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan enjoyed hunting, fishing,
  farming, and ranching, and he was known for his deep sense of
  patriotism and dedication to his state and nation; his commitment
  to serving his fellow citizens continues to inspire students at his
  high school alma mater, where he is honored in a display in the
  school's History Room; and
         WHEREAS, Texans owe an incalculable debt of gratitude to the
  men and women of law enforcement who risk their lives in our behalf,
  and Agent Attaway's commitment to protecting the safety and
  well-being of the public will forever be remembered by all those who
  had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of
  Travis Attaway and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his
  family: to his parents, Tom and Dorothy Attaway; to his sister, Jill
  Attaway Beard, and her husband, Warren; to his nephew, Thomas Lee
  Beard; to his nieces, Brighton Lace Beard and Peyton Jewell Beard;
  and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Travis
  Attaway.
