R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Central High School in Galveston is commemorating
  the 132nd anniversary of its founding with a three-day celebration
  on June 18-20, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, The first African American high school in Texas,
  Central High School was organized in 1885 and operated in its
  earliest years first in rented quarters on 16th Street and then at a
  location on 15th Street; in 1893, a dedicated six-classroom
  facility designed by famed architect Nicholas Clayton was
  constructed on Avenue M, and a new wing was later added to
  accommodate the growing student population; this space housed the
  school until it transitioned in 1954 to its final location between
  31st and 33rd Streets; and
         WHEREAS, Following the integration of Galveston public
  schools, Central High was closed in 1968; the Old Central Cultural
  Center was established in 1974 in the former school building on
  Avenue M, and it continues to serve as a landmark to preserve the
  legacy of this historic institution, which provided vital
  educational opportunities to more than 40,000 young men and women
  during its 83 years of operation; and
         WHEREAS, Central High School remains an important part of the
  rich heritage of the city of Galveston, and the anniversary of its
  establishment offers a welcome occasion to recognize its many
  significant contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 132nd anniversary of the
  founding of Central High School in Galveston and extend to all those
  associated with the institution sincere best wishes for a memorable
  event.
