R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Proud members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
  Incorporated in Arlington are celebrating the 35th anniversary of
  the founding of the sorority's Xi Theta Omega chapter at an event on
  May 14, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Established at Howard University in 1908, Alpha
  Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter
  organization for African American women in the nation; dedicated to
  improving the social stature of girls and women in general and to
  promoting the unity and scholastic excellence of college women in
  particular, the sorority today encompasses 983 chapters that
  represent more than 265,000 members around the world; and
         WHEREAS, The Xi Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
  Sorority Incorporated was chartered in Arlington, Texas, on May 14,
  1982, and that same year, the group established the city's first
  Black History Month observance; in the years since, the chapter has
  spearheaded numerous programs that benefit the community while also
  mentoring college women in service and leadership; moreover,
  through its Arlington Community of Lovely Young Teens Excelling in
  Service (ACOLYTES) initiative, it has helped high school girls
  strive for excellence, unity, service, and friendship; and
         WHEREAS, The Xi Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
  Sorority Incorporated also participates in the international
  programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, supporting its
  work in educational enrichment and environmental issues, as well as
  in the promotion of health and the strengthening of families; and
         WHEREAS, For three and a half decades, the women of the Xi
  Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated have
  dedicated themselves to supporting one another and being of service
  to all mankind, and they may indeed take pride in their achievements
  as they celebrate this special occasion; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Xi Theta
  Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and extend
  to its members sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable
  celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Xi Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
  Sorority Incorporated as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
