R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, John Barrera of Corpus Christi has distinguished |
|
|
himself by winning two first-place awards at the 2017 Pan Jiu-Jitsu |
|
|
International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championship, held |
|
|
March 16-19, in Irvine, California; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Competing against other master 5 brown belt athletes |
|
|
from around the world, John Barrera claimed first place in both the |
|
|
ultra-heavy and open-class divisions; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A longtime martial artist, Mr. Barrera began |
|
|
learning traditional karate as a child, advancing all the way to a |
|
|
second-degree black belt; after taking a break from the sport for |
|
|
several years, he decided to try jiu-jitsu in 2011, at the urging of |
|
|
his two sons; in addition to training and competing, he also devotes |
|
|
time each week to coaching at Strong Arm Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Winning a championship represents the culmination |
|
|
of countless hours of hard work and an enduring commitment to |
|
|
excellence, and through his impressive showing at the Pan Jiu-Jitsu |
|
|
IBJJF Championship event, John Barrera has become a source of great |
|
|
pride to his community and to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |
|
|
be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate John Barrera on winning two |
|
|
first-place medals at the 2017 Pan Jiu-Jitsu International |
|
|
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championship and extend to him |
|
|
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Barrera as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
